I have become mildly obsessed with one story of Roaul Island.
In 1878 a man called Tom Bell moved to Roaul (then Sunday Island) and lived there with his wife a 6 children for 35 years. During that time the family grew to 10 (they lost one child) and in near total isolation fought for survival.
It is a story of extreme determination and courage.
If you are interested in the story you should read “Crusoes of Sunday Island” – it is quite hard to find but you can see it (in full) online at www.nzetc.org
This story has deeply moved me and influenced my work for the exhibition.
