My first ‘artwork photo’ from the Kdec trip.

Bell’s Track #1 2011 Photographic print

This is the first of a series of images I took on the walk to Denham Bay on Raoul Island. This track is the same that Tom Bell and his family used in the late 1800’s – it takes you right along the rim of the live volcano. A few weeks before we arrived a cyclone had ripped through causing notable damage to the bush.

I found this bush beautiful but also dark and ominous. It almost felt as if the mountain was watching you.

This photo of one of the massive Kermadec Nikaus was taken with my old glass lens and captures that mood. I love the idea that the 100year old lens is close to what Bell might have had to record the moment.
