In 1875 Tom Bell moved with his family of 7 to live on remote Roaul Island (then Sunday island). The family lived on the island in almost total isolation for 35years. While standing on Denham Bay Beach I was stuck by it’s similarity to my home at Breaker Bay in Wellington. My thoughts turned to my own daughter who is the same age as 12 year old Hettie Bell when she arrived at the island. I was deeply moved by the thought of this young girl who lived in isolation for the best years of her life. What games did she play with her sisters? Did they dream of weddings and a normal life? In this shot my daughter modeled wearing period clothes and holding a ‘bouquet’ of seaweed to represent Hetties ‘marriage to Roaul’. This photo was shot with a homemade lens with glass from my grandfathers 100year old camera on a modern digital camera.
